The Monastery of Tvrdoš Trebinje

The Monastery of Tvrdoš is located on the right bank of the Trebišnjica River, 5 km west of Trebinje. It was built on the foundations of a church from the 4th century and is one of the oldest cultural and historical monuments in the Republic of Srpska. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Tvrdoš was the seat of the Hum-Herzegovinian and Trebinje Metropolitan.

The monastery is also known for being the place where Saint Vasilije Ostroski received monastic tonsure and priesthood, after which he served as the parish priest of Popovo Polje. That's why Saint Vasilije is also called "Ostroski and Tvrdoski".

A unique feature of the interior of the current church is the glass floor, which serves as a "window to the past" through which the foundations of the 4th century church can be seen.

The monastery also maintains a long tradition of wine production, dating back to the 15th century, through the renovation of vineyards, a wine cellar and a modern winery.
